The chance to acquire a large‑scale, currently operating land‑based aquaculture enterprise has come to market.

Colliers has been appointed to sell the business and assets of the ABTAS Marketing Abalone and Fish Farm, located in one of Tasmania’s most established aquaculture regions at the mouth of the Tamar River.

The offering comprises an advanced marine aquaculture enterprise with existing production capacity of upwards of 50 tonnes per annum of abalone and upwards of 90 tonnes per annum across other species, representing a highly scalable platform for domestic or export‑focused aquaculture operators.

The business is fully licensed and operates on a secure long‑term lease from TasPorts, providing operational certainty in a tightly regulated and supply‑constrained sector.

The opportunity is being offered as an immediate going‑concern, inclusive of all land improvements, plant and equipment, stock, intellectual property, licences, goodwill and associated assets.

Colliers Agribusiness national director Duncan McCulloch described the sale as a “rare chance” to acquire a fully developed, land‑based aquaculture operation with existing scale, licences in place and substantial future upside.

“With strong global demand for premium abalone and increasing focus on sustainable and controlled production methods, this facility offers an outstanding foundation for expansion, diversification into additional species or value‑added processing,” he said.

The site extends across 12.9ha of flat, developable land, benefiting from excellent water reliability, strong power connectivity and extensive high‑quality structural improvements. Infrastructure includes a large processing facility, hatchery, nursery, grow‑out tanks, pump shed, workshop and offices.

The sale package also includes 18 tonnes of mature hybrid abalone and 10 tonnes of juvenile hybrid abalone, which may be acquired as part of the going concern or on a stand‑alone basis.

Connor Dixon, Colliers Agribusiness executive, said the enterprise is strategically positioned at the mouth of the Tamar River, offering excellent access to ports, major cities and supporting infrastructure.

“Combined with the scale of the site and the quality of existing infrastructure, the location strongly supports operational efficiency today and long‑term development potential,” he said.

The sale is being conducted on behalf of Andrew MacNeill and Justin Howlett of SMB Advisory, in their capacity as joint and several voluntary administrators of Australian Ocean Biotechnology Pty Ltd and ABTAS Marketing Pty Ltd.

They were appointed on April 20.

The administrators are undertaking an urgent expressions of interest campaign and are seeking a going concern sale.

The business and assets of the ABTAS Marketing Abalone and Fish Farm are for sale via expressions of interest, closing May 15 at 4pm.
